The District 5 Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) drill was held on 9/12 in Danville.
29 "patients" from a bus accident were located and transported to area hospitals.
In this scenario the bus had rolled off the highway and ended up in a remote field down an embankment. Patients were trapped under the bus requiring extrication. Many were also located in the woods that abutted the field. Peacham Rescue 1 and Engine 1 provided on scene lighting, extrication and medical assistance. Danville Fire Dept provided Incident Command with mutual aid coming from Peacham, St. Johnsbury, Walden, Concord, Waterford and Cabot.

Chief Berwick indicates areas that require searching. Rescue 1 provided scene lighting and EMS support. 29 "patients" were injured. MCI tags were used to triage on scene. Firefighters and EMS personnel from many departments participated.

Thermal imaging cameras (this one operated by FF/EMT Mark Fitzhugh) were used to locate patients thrown from the bus. Rescue 1's 4-wheel drive system made it possible to drive close to the incident located far of the main road. Fire Chief/ECA Jeff Berwick, FF Cody Berwick and FF Adam King survey the incident scene prior to a search. Photos by Fire Captain/EMT Chip Deasy
